Larger CutA bigger eye shade than a standard mask, so less light creeps in at the edges.
Adjustable ClosureThe long adjustable strap suits a wide range of head sizes without pinching.
Wide Ear BandThe band extends over the ears instead of pressing a thin elastic line across them.
Smooth Silk FaceSilk sits lightly against the skin and slides rather than drags.

A soft plum silk sleep mask with a wide band that blocks the light and stays put all night.

Cut larger than a standard eye mask, with an adjustable closure and a broad band that reaches over the ears, so side sleepers get darkness without a thin strap digging in.

A plum silk sleep mask cut wider and taller than most eye masks, so the edges sit beyond your lashes and keep light out.

The band is broad where it passes the ears, which means no thin elastic line rubbing while you lie on your side.

An adjustable closure lets you set the tension once and leave it, whether you have a small head or a large one.

Silk is smooth, so hair and skin slide over it with less friction than cotton.

Light and flat enough to fold into a handbag, a carry-on or a bedside drawer.

Wide Band Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask (Light Plum)

Most sleep masks fail in the same two places. They are too small, so light leaks in along the nose and under the lower edge, and they are held on by a thin elastic cord that digs a line into the side of your head. This mask was cut to answer both of those complaints. The eye shade is larger than a standard mask, which puts the edges well clear of your lashes and your cheekbones, and the strap is a wide band rather than a string.

Wide Band Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask (Light Plum)

The band is the part people notice first. It runs broad where it passes over the ears, so instead of a narrow cord pressing on the top of the ear, you get a soft, spread load. If you sleep on your side with your face half into the pillow, that difference is the whole thing. It also helps hold earplugs in place for anyone who uses them on a plane or in a noisy flat.

Wide Band Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask (Light Plum)

The closure is adjustable along a long run of strap, so you can set it loose enough to avoid pressure on the eyes and still firm enough that it does not slide off at three in the morning. There is a shaped cut at the nose, which is how the mask gets a close seal along the bridge without squashing anything.

Wide Band Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask (Light Plum)

The face of the mask is silk. Silk is a smooth, fine fibre, so it slides over skin and hair with less friction than a cotton or polyester mask, and it does not feel scratchy on the eyelids. The colour is a soft light plum, a calm muted purple rather than a bright one, in a plain solid with no print.

Wide Band Mulberry Silk Sleep Mask (Light Plum)

It folds flat and weighs very little, which makes it an easy thing to keep in a travel bag. The packed size is about 24.3 x 13.6 x 1.9 cm (9.6 x 5.4 x 0.7 in) and the packed weight is around 68 g. Momme weight and the country of manufacture are not stated by the maker.

Not sure yet? That is fine.

Silk is something you judge by touch, and you cannot do that through a screen. We refund the price you paid, including standard delivery.

If it turns up faulty, damaged or not as described, that is on us. The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 covers you, and we pay the return postage. Read the full detail on our refunds and returns page, or ask us anything before you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this product?

It is a single adult sleep mask made from silk, in a solid light plum colour. The eye shade is larger than a typical mask and the strap is a wide adjustable band rather than a thin cord.

Why is the mask bigger than a normal eye mask?

A larger shade puts the edges further from your lashes and cheekbones, which reduces the gaps light can slip through. It also means the mask does not press directly on your eyelids when you blink.

What makes the wide band different from a normal elastic strap?

A thin elastic cord concentrates pressure in one narrow line, usually right across the top of the ear. This band is broad where it passes the ears, so the same holding force is spread over a wider area.

Is this a good silk sleep mask for side sleepers?

The wide band is the reason many side sleepers prefer this style. There is no narrow cord trapped between your ear and the pillow, so there is less to press in when half your face is on the mattress.

Does it really block out light?

The larger cut and the shaped nose section are designed to limit light leaking at the edges. How complete the darkness feels still depends on your face shape and how you set the strap tension.

What is the nose cut for?

It is a shaped notch at the bridge of the nose. It lets the mask sit closer along the nose, which is normally the spot where light sneaks in on a flat, unshaped mask.

Can I adjust the fit?

Yes. The closure runs along a long section of strap, so you can set it tighter or looser and leave it there. Most people set it once in the first week and never touch it again.

Will it fit a small head or a large head?

The adjustable range is generous, which is the point of the long closure. Set it so the mask is held without pressure on the eyes, then test it by turning your head side to side.

What size is the mask?

The maker lists the packaged size as 24.31 x 13.59 x 1.9 cm (9.6 x 5.4 x 0.7 in). The exact dimensions of the eye shade on its own are not stated.

How heavy is it?

The packaged weight is about 68 g. That is light enough that you stop noticing it on your face after a few minutes.

What is it made from?

The material is listed as silk, described as a natural material. Momme weight, weave type and the precise silk grade are not stated by the maker.

What does momme mean and why is it not listed here?

Momme is the weight measure used for silk fabric, a bit like thread count for cotton. The maker does not state a momme figure for this mask, so we cannot quote one.

What colour is it exactly?

It is a soft, muted light plum. Think a gentle dusty purple rather than a bright violet, in a plain solid with no pattern.

Is there a pattern or print?

No. The pattern is listed as solid, so the whole mask is one colour.

Why do people choose silk over cotton for an eye mask?

Silk is a fine, smooth fibre, so it slides over skin and hair with less friction than cotton. For a mask that sits right on your face for hours, that smoother surface is the main appeal.

How do I wash it?

Hand wash only, in cool water with a mild detergent made for delicates. Do not wring or bleach, and do not put it in a tumble dryer.

Can I machine wash it on a delicate cycle?

The care instruction is hand wash only, so we would not recommend a machine. The agitation and the drum can be hard on both the silk and the elastic in the band.

How should I dry it?

Press it gently between a clean dry towel to lift the water, then lay it flat to dry. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters, which can make silk brittle over time.

Can I iron it?

If you iron at all, use the lowest setting with a cloth between the iron and the silk, and keep well away from the elastic. In most cases a flat dry is enough and creases fall out on their own.

How often should I wash it?

Every one to two weeks is reasonable for everyday use, more often if you wear face products to bed. Washing before first use is also a good habit with any new fabric item.

Will it help with earplugs?

The band covers the ear area, so it can help stop earplugs working their way out while you move. It is not a seal and it is not a substitute for proper plugs, it just keeps them where you put them.

Does it reduce noise?

The band sits over the ears, so it can muffle sound slightly. It is a fabric band, not a noise-blocking product, so treat any quietening as a small bonus.

Is this a good travel sleep mask?

Yes. It folds flat, weighs very little and takes up almost no room in a carry-on or handbag, which is what you want from a travel eye mask.

Can I wear it with glasses or contact lenses on a flight?

Take glasses off before putting the mask on, since the arms will press on your temples. For contacts, follow your optometrist's advice about wearing them while sleeping.

Is one size suitable for teenagers?

The age range is listed as adult, but the adjustable strap means many older teenagers will get a comfortable fit. For younger children, we would not recommend it.

Does the colour run in the wash?

Wash it on its own the first couple of times, in cool water, as you would with any dyed silk. Avoid soaking it for long periods or using hot water.

Does it come as a pair or a single mask?

It is a single mask, one count per pack. If you want one for the bedroom and one for travel, buy two.

Does it make a good gift?

It does. A soft plum silk sleep mask is a small, easy present for someone who travels, works shifts or just has a streetlight outside the bedroom window.

How is delivery handled in South Africa?

Delivery is tracked to every province and takes 10 to 20 working days. It is free on orders over R1800, and R250 on orders under that. Payment is by card only.

What if it is not right for me?

You have 14 days from delivery to cancel for any reason, as long as the mask is unused and unwashed and in its original packaging. Get in touch and we will walk you through sending it back.

How to Choose a Silk Sleep Mask That Actually Stays On

6 min read Mulberry Silk Company

The problem with most sleep masks

You buy a sleep mask because the room is never properly dark. There is a streetlight, or a neighbour's security light, or you work nights and have to sleep while the sun is up. So you get a mask, and for about two nights it feels like a fix.

Then the problems start. Light creeps in along the side of your nose. The thin elastic cord presses a line into your head, and if you sleep on your side it goes right over the top of your ear, which is a surprisingly tender spot. The mask rides up in your sleep and you wake at 4am with it on your forehead. Or it is so small that the edge sits on your eyelashes, and you cannot blink without feeling fabric.

Almost every one of those failures comes down to two things, size and strap. A small mask leaks light. A thin strap either grips too hard or does not grip enough. This mask was cut and built to deal with both.

What the wide band actually does

Here is the physics, in plain terms. A strap has to apply a certain amount of force to keep the mask on your face. If that force runs through a 5 mm cord, all of it lands on a 5 mm line of skin. If it runs through a band several centimetres wide, the same force is spread out, so the pressure at any one point is much lower.

That is why the band on this mask extends out from the eye shade and over the ear area. You are not getting less holding power. You are getting the same hold with the load spread over more skin.

For side sleepers this matters more than anything else on the spec sheet. When you lie on your side, your ear is pinned between your head and the pillow. Add a thin cord running across it and the pressure stacks up. A broad band sits flatter, and the pillow pushes against fabric rather than a cord.

There is a side benefit too. If you use earplugs on a plane or in a noisy block of flats, the band sits over them and helps stop them working loose while you turn over. It is a fabric band, not a noise product, so do not expect it to silence a room. It just keeps plugs where you put them.

Size, and why bigger is better here

This mask is cut larger than the average eye mask. The obvious benefit is coverage, since more fabric means fewer gaps. But there is a second benefit that is less obvious.

When a mask is small, the edges land right on the bone around your eye socket, which is where your lashes are. Every blink brushes fabric. A larger shade pushes the edges out past that zone and onto the softer parts of your face, so your eyes have room to move underneath.

The shaped nose cut does the other half of the job. The nose bridge is where light gets in on almost every flat mask, because the fabric has to bridge a gap. A shaped notch lets the mask follow the shape of your nose instead of tenting over it.

Getting the fit right

Spend five minutes on this the first night and you will not have to think about it again.

Put the mask on while sitting up and pull the closure until the mask is held firmly but you feel no pressure on your eyeballs. You should be able to open your eyes under the mask without the fabric pushing back. Then lie down, turn your head left and right a few times, and see if it shifts. If it slides, take it up a little. If you feel a ridge forming anywhere, let it out.

A common mistake is to go too tight, on the theory that tighter equals darker. It does not really work that way. Past a certain point you are only adding pressure, and pressure is what wakes you up at 3am.

Silk, and what it does and does not do

Silk is a fine, smooth natural fibre. On a mask, the thing you notice is the surface. Hair and skin slide over silk with less friction than over cotton, so there is less dragging when you turn your head. It does not feel scratchy against the eyelids, which is the complaint people have about cheaper polyester masks.

That is the honest extent of it. We are not going to tell you a mask will change your skin or your hair, because that is not a claim we can stand behind. What we can say is that silk is smooth, light and pleasant to wear for eight hours.

The maker does not state a momme weight, weave type or country of manufacture for this mask, so we are not going to guess at any of those. The material is listed as silk with natural material features, and that is what we will say.

Who this suits

Side sleepers come first, for the reasons already covered. If you have ever taken off a mask in the morning and found a red line over your ear, this is the shape you want.

Travellers come second. It folds flat, the packed size is about 24.3 x 13.6 x 1.9 cm (9.6 x 5.4 x 0.7 in), and the packed weight is roughly 68 g. It goes into a handbag without a thought.

Shift workers are the third group. If you are sleeping between 9am and 4pm, you need more than a token bit of fabric over your eyes, and a larger shade with a nose cut gets you closer to proper darkness.

It is also a reasonable gift. A soft plum silk mask is one of those small presents that looks considered and actually gets used, unlike most of what ends up in a hamper.

Looking after it

Hand wash only. Cool water, a mild detergent made for delicate fabrics, and a gentle squeeze rather than a scrub. Do not wring it out, do not bleach it, and keep it out of the tumble dryer. The heat is hard on silk and harder on elastic.

To dry, press it between a clean towel to take out the bulk of the water, then lay it flat somewhere out of direct sun. A windowsill in the afternoon sun is the one place not to put it.

Wash it every week or two if you wear it nightly, and more often if you use face creams or oils at bedtime. Keep it away from hair clips, zips and velcro in your bag, since those are what snag a fine weave. If you travel with it, a small cloth pouch is enough protection.

Done this way, it holds its colour and its stretch for a long time. The elastic usually gives out before the silk does, and that takes years with gentle washing.

A note on buying

A quick checklist when you compare any silk eye mask. Look at the strap width before anything else. Look at the size of the shade, not just the packaging photo. Check whether there is a nose cut. Check the care instruction, because hand wash is normal for silk and anything claiming machine washable silk deserves a second look.

Then be realistic about what a mask does. It blocks light. A good one does it without hurting your head. That is the job.

The short version

This is a light plum silk sleep mask cut larger than standard, with a shaped nose section and a wide adjustable band that runs over the ears instead of a thin cord. It suits side sleepers, travellers and anyone sleeping in daylight. Hand wash only, dry flat, and set the strap once so you never have to think about it again.

Delivery in South Africa is tracked to every province and takes 10 to 20 working days. It is free over R1800 and R250 under that, payment by card. If it does not work for you, you have 14 days from delivery to cancel, unused and unwashed.
